Minimum Wage Is Going Up - Here's What Employers Need to Do

The Fair Work Commission (FWC) has handed down its 2026 Annual Wage Review, and the numbers are in. From 1 July 2026, the national minimum wage will rise by 5.97%, and modern award minimum rates will increase by 4.75%.

If you employ staff on minimum or award wages, this one's for you. Here's what's changing, what it means for your business, and how to stay on the right side of compliance.

4.75%

The national minimum wage applies to employees who aren't covered by a modern award or enterprise agreement. But the 4.75% award increase affects far more people - roughly 2.8 million workers across Australia, or about 21% of the workforce.

The FWC also adjusted the lowest-paid award classifications so that no award worker earns less than $26.44 per hour - aligning the bottom of the award scale with the new national minimum wage.

FAQs for Business Owners

Your Action Checklist

  • Review every employee's current classification and pay rate against the new minimums
  • Update pay rates in Xero (or your payroll system) before your first July pay run
  • Check that allowances, penalties, and overtime are recalculating correctly on the new base
  • Review enterprise agreements to ensure they still meet or exceed award rates
  • Communicate pay changes to your employees in writing
  • Prepare for Payday Super obligations starting the same date

Navigating wage changes, payroll compliance, and Payday Super all at once can feel overwhelming. That's exactly the kind of thing we help with. If you're unsure about your obligations or want us to review your setup, reach out to our team.
